How does it work?
Once set up, choose your research mode: run /ars-research for a full 3,000-8,000 word APA report, /ars-socratic for guided Socratic exploration of your research question, /ars-systematic-review for PRISMA 2020 compliance, or /ars-lit-review for an annotated bibliography. The 13-agent team works through: research question refinement, strategy design, source discovery plus verification (Semantic Scholar API plus 4-index triangulation), synthesis, devil's advocate challenge, ethics review, and monitoring for emerging contradictions. Output: research brief, methodology blueprint, annotated bibliography, synthesis report, and INSIGHT collection (key ideas the researcher should engage with, not auto-implement).

What's required to run this?
Requires Semantic Scholar API availability (degrades gracefully if unavailable). 4-index triangulation uses Crossref + OpenAlex APIs (no keys required; throttled at 0.1-1 req/s). Optional ARS_CROSS_MODEL env var activates GPT-5.4 Pro or Gemini 3.1 Pro for cross-model integrity sample checks and independent Devil's Advocate critique. Optional ARS_SOCRATIC_READING_PROBE=1 (goal-oriented sessions only) fires a one-time honesty probe when a user cites a specific paper.

Anti-sycophancy safeguards
Devil's Advocate runs concession-threshold protocol (score rebuttals 1-5, concede only ≥4). Dialogue health monitoring detects persistent agreement and auto-injects challenges. Intent detection separates exploratory (no auto-convergence) from goal-oriented modes.
