G2 Category AEO Score
How this is calculated
One thing precisely rather than everything approximately: what AI assistants say when their answer is built on G2. Everything a vendor would need in order to disagree with the number is on this page.
- What it measures
- Which products AI assistants put on a buyer’s shortlist, and how high they land.
- Which answers count
- Only answers that cited G2 and named a product, for a fixed set of buyer questions per category.
- How fresh it is
- Asked every day, rebuilt weekly over a trailing 30 days.
How the score is built
70% · 15% · 15%Ask an AI assistant about a category and it names four to seven products, not the hundreds on the Grid. That answer is the shortlist. A fixed set of 10 buyer questions goes to 6 AI assistants every day, and we score the answers where G2 was one of the cited sources — 814 of them in CRM.
A hundred points, and this is how they are allocated. One question asked three ways — did the product make the shortlist, how high on it, and was it in the top three — each measured across every CRM answer, so 100 would mean named first in all of them.
- Coverage70%
- Did it make the shortlist? The share of the category's answers that name the product at all. An answer either brings it up or it does not.

- Position is ignored here. Named last counts exactly as much as named first.
- Prominence15%
- How high on the shortlist?Mean reciprocal rank: named first scores 1, second a half, third a third, and an answer that never names it scores nothing.

- Divided by every answer in the category, not only the ones it appears in. The conditional version rewards being named rarely and early.
- Top-3 rate15%
- Was it in the top three of it?The share of the category's answers that open with the product in the first three names, which is as far as most buyers read.

0.3%
- The strictest of the three. A zero means never in the opening three — not never named.
Coverage leads because being named at all is the outcome a buyer gets; the other two say where in the answer the name landed. The split is a judgment rather than a fitted parameter, and it is a safe one to make: the three measures move together closely enough that equal weight and position-heavy weightings return the same leaderboard as this one — a rank correlation above 0.99 in every published category, and an average shift of under one place. Prefer a different split and you get almost exactly the same ranking.
Each measure is taken as it is, a share of the category’s answers, not curved against the field or scored against the leader. So a score says what a product has actually won, and the leader can still improve. Most products are named in only a few percent of answers, so most scores are low; that is the finding, not a flaw. A product is never compared with a product outside its category, and G2 review data is reported beside the score, never inside it.
What we asked
10 questions · fixedEach category is measured on a fixed set of buyer questions — 10 of them — put to 6 AI assistants in 3 markets, every day. On any given day a category receives 4 to 10 of its questions across 4 to 6 of the assistants; the set is fixed, the daily run samples it.
The questions never change. The same set has run every day since the panel’s current configuration began. When a product moves up or down a leaderboard, the answers moved. The questions did not.
They are not asked in equal volume: the bar beside each is its share of the category’s scored answers. Some read like a template, because the category name is dropped into one. Both are properties of the panel, so both are shown rather than tidied.

Which answers count
Answers citing G2We put the questions to the AI assistants every day and record what each one said. Of those answers, we score the ones that cited G2 and named at least one product. That count is printed on every leaderboard and is the denominator of every metric. The real boundary is the panel itself: a fixed set of questions per category, not every question a buyer could ask and not the whole internet.
Each leaderboard also reports a sharper figure: how many scored answers cited that category’s own page rather than a product page, a comparison or a discussion thread. G2 serves every category at two addresses — /categories/live-chat and /best-live-chat-software — and AI cites both, in proportions that differ sharply by category, so an answer counts there if it drew on either.
A vendor comparing this to their own Profound or Semrush dashboard should expect a different figure, because it answers a different question: not how often does AI mention you anywhere, but when an AI answer is built on G2’s view of your category, where do you place.
- Assistants, pooled unweighted
- 6 general-purpose AI assistants — the ones buyers actually ask — each counted equally, none weighted by its own market share.
- Markets, pooled unweighted
- 3 English-language markets, pooled the same way, so a rank is never one country’s view.
The window, and what a refresh changes
30 days · weeklyQuestions run daily; the leaderboard is rebuilt weekly over a trailing 30 days — currently 5 October 2026 to 3 November 2026, pulled 4 November 2026. Nothing inside the window is weighted by recency: an answer from the first day counts exactly as much as one from the last.
So a rank only moves when the answers move. New answers enter the window and the oldest drop out, and coverage, prominence and top-3 rate shift with them. That is the movement the score exists to show, and it is the only thing that produces it.
Matching names to products
88–96% matchedAI answers name brands, not G2 listings, so every name is matched to a product on the category’s Grid before it counts. A category is published only where most of what AI names can be matched, because a ranking that silently ignores a large share of the names is worse than no ranking.
Two of the matching rules are judgment calls, so their share is shown for every category: a company’s name credited to its only product on the Grid, and a name two Grid products share credited to the one with at least three quarters of the reviews between them. Where neither holds, the name is left out.
